“Absolutely not,” Sebastian says the next day when I tell him my plan.

I wave a dismissive hand and adjust my mask so it fully covers my nose. “Tessa is my best friend. There’s no way I’m not going to do this.”

“You’re ill.”

“Insults will get you nowhere.”

Sebastian really does have a stupendous scowl. Every feature joins in, and he projects grumpy. Two days ago, it might have had its desired effect, but now I know he’s capable of smiling and joking and buying me medicine.

“It’s easier if you just give in,” I tell him as I pass him on my way to his car.

“I could refuse to drive you.”

“And potentially ruin their wedding?” I send him a slightly smug smile because, let’s face it, he won’t do that. He’s too nice. “Come on.”

“Give me strength,” he mutters as he clambers into the car after me. He clips in his seatbelt and checks to make sure I’m wearing mine too (oh now he cares about road safety) before starting the car. “Where are we going?”

“Here.” I hold a hand out for his phone and put the address in maps.

Sebastian rolls up his sleeves and puts the car in reverse, twisting so his elbow is braced on the seat behind. “Hold on tight.”

I grip my seatbelt instinctively. “Don’t you dare.”

He throws me a smile, white teeth flashing, before swinging us around backward. Before we’ve even stopped, he throws the car in first and peels away, almost immediately slowing to a reasonable speed. At my glower, he throws his head back and laughs. The sound settles in my core like a cat’s purr, warm and pleasant.

“It’s okay, I have no intention of killing us before we get there.”

“Just on the way back?”

“Depends how the meeting goes.”

I make a sound that could be a snort and my gaze lands on the hint of a tattoo peeking from under his rolled sleeves. Either he’s never shown off that part of his arm before or I haven’t been paying attention.

“You have a tattoo,” I accuse.
